The Interesting Copper Post Cap Decorative Finial
A copper post cap is among the most interesting and beautiful embellishments you can add to your fence. Their shiny, rich tones add a classy look and feel that really dresses up a plain structure. Usually, the copper has been coated with a material that protects the post cap before and during installation. Interestingly, when the copper is exposed to the elements, the sun’s ultraviolet rays, moisture, and pollution begin to break down its coating, exposing the metal underneath. This natural weathering of copper gradually changes its surface color. Salt, moisture, sunlight, and orientation can all affect the final color, but usually copper progresses from a salmon color to russet browns and grays, and finally to a blue-green or gray-green patina.
Adding a decorative finial to the post cap is like adding a swirl of icing to the top of a cupcake. Finials come in all sorts of interesting shapes such as globes, pineapples, acorns and various geometric shapes. You can even buy whimsical designs such as dragonflies and butterflies to top off your copper post cap. This all brings to mind a famous quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. “A beautiful form is better than a beautiful face; it gives a higher pleasure than statues or pictures; it is the finest of the fine arts.”
